L-Ornithine

L-Ornithine

L-Ornithine is a nonessential amino acid. It can be found in protein-rich foods such as meats, fish, dairy,l-ornithine and eggs. As a nonessential amino acid, it can also be synthesized in the body from other amino acids. Ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate (OKG) is a salt that is formed from ornithine and alpha ketoglutarate. OKG is more bioavailable than ornithine alone. Ornithine and OKG are precursors of the amino acids proline and arginine. It is speculated that ornithine supplementation can increase concentrations of both arginine and proline. Arginine is important in the production of nitric oxide, a powerful vasodilator that can improve blood flow. In addition, arginine is involved in the production of growth hormone. Proline is an important amino acid found in connective tissues such as collagen. Ornithine supplementation could indirectly promote the availability of both arginine and proline. There is also evidence that OKG supplementation has a better effect on both arginine and proline compared to ornithine alone. Studies have looked at ornithine and OKG supplementation in various populations, including bodybuilders, burn patients, and wound-healing patients.
